Instructions
Boil Breadfruit in Water
16 minFill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil. Once boiling, carefully add the whole breadfruit to the pot. Allow it to cook for approximately 30 minutes, or until the flesh is tender when pierced with a fork.
Cool the Breadfruit
6 minAfter cooking, carefully remove the breadfruit from the boiling water using tongs. Set it aside on a cutting board or plate to cool slightly, making it easier to handle for the next steps.
Slice Breadfruit into Rounds
16 minUsing a sharp knife, cut the cooled breadfruit into thin, uniform rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Ensure that each slice is even for consistent cooking and presentation.
Peel and Core the Slices
5 minOnce sliced, gently peel off the skin from each round of breadfruit. If desired, you can also remove the core; however, leaving it in can add extra texture to your taco shell.
Shape into Taco Shells
5 minTake each breadfruit slice and gently bend it into a taco shell shape. Use two toothpicks to secure the shape, ensuring it holds together during frying.
Prepare Remaining Shells
5 minRepeat the shaping process for all remaining breadfruit slices, placing each secured taco shell on a plate. Ensure they are not touching to avoid sticking.
Heat Oil for Frying
3 minIn a frying pan, pour in enough oil for deep frying and heat it over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when it shimmers and a small piece of breadfruit sizzles upon contact.
Fry the Taco Shells
22 minCarefully use tongs to submerge the shaped breadfruit shells in the hot oil. Fry them until they turn a golden brown, turning them as needed for even cooking. You may leave the toothpicks in during frying if they are small enough.
Drain Excess Oil
2 minOnce the taco shells are golden and crispy, remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. This will help absorb any excess oil and keep them crispy.
Fill with Codfish and Lettuce
5 minTake each crispy taco shell and fill it generously with your chosen fillings, such as codfish and lettuce. Pile them high for a delicious and satisfying bite.
